Trash is art at huge recycler in Davenport, Iowa

When Timber Design principal Lars Lawson asked me to go to Davenport to shoot some branding images for Alter Recycling, I didn’t know I’d fall in love with the place.  Not so much Davenport — it’s a fine town — but this recycling center, with its mountains of scrap metal and beastly machines chewing everything up.  I saw an entire Winnebago picked up by the nose, shaken like a dog killing a snake, and tossed onto a scrap heap.  Like a rag doll.  Very cool.

In addition to images showing the scale of the place, we concentrated on taking artful images of the workers and the material they spend their days with.  Here are some of the results.

  1. i love these. the gritty beauty of these portraits in juxtaposition to the “trash”…which is also, oddly beautiful.
